TEACHERS
Lazaro Lopez is an independent professional dancer, teacher and choreographer. Affectionately known as “Ito” by his family and colleagues, he is one of the most talended and distinguished Afro-Cuban dancers in the world, the original “rumbero”. He graduated with honours in 1989 from the Cuban National School of Art and Dance (ENA) in Havana and started dancing professionally with the leading folkloric dance company Raices Profundas.
With this company Lazaro performed as a soloist dancer and went on tour to Mexico and Japan with the show “Noche Tropical” which was choreographed by Santiago Alfonso, working alongside famous artists such as the conga player Tata Guines and the singers Omara Portuondo and Carlos Embale. In Mexico the company won the price of Best Folkloric Dance Company. During this time he also featured in a film called “Maria Antonia”, produced by ICRTV and in another film called “El siglo de las luces”, a Spanish/French production, where he danced the Orisha Shango.
In 1994, he joined the folkloric dance company Pinos Nuevos and went on tour to various European countries as well as Martinique, Guadeloupe and St. Martin. The shows covered the folkloric and traditional dances of Cuba such as the Orishas, Abakua, Congo, Arara, Rumba, Danzon, Contradanza, Son, Guaracha, Mambo, Cha Cha Cha, Conga (carnival dance) and Casino (Salsa). During this tour he won three prices for the best performance and characterisation.
In 1997, Lazaro joined the renowned dance company Compania Folklorica Cubana J.J. where, as the principal dancer, he performed in the most prominent theatres of Cuba, like the Garcia Lorca, Carlos Marx, Teatro America. In 1998, he performed in the musical comedy of “El Burgues Gentil Hombre” which had its debut in the Mella Theatre in Havana and then in the Chaillot Theatre in Paris. Following the success of the show, they toured all over France, then Spain and Mexico. During this time, Lazaro also regularly taught dance and percussions summer courses in the National School of Art and Dance (ENA), in Havana. In December 2000, he came to London to perform as a lead dancer in the famous West-End show Lady Salsa, a Cuban dance and music spectacular that interweaved the history of the revolution with the history of Cuban Music and Dance.
Since then Lazaro has been based in London and has been dancing and teaching with his partner Paola Lopez who began her dance training of Salsa and Cuban traditional dances in 1996. Paola is an excellent dancer who possesses an outstanding and distinctive style, blending elements of Son, Rumba, and Afro-Cuban Orishas into her dancing, with passion, vitality and confidence. She is also a first-rate instructor, who focuses on teaching confidence in all the basic steps, feeling and counting the rhythm, developing a good technique and style, body movement, leading and following skills and musical interpretation. This is combined with a dedicated and patient approach, teaching an elegant and smooth style when dancing Salsa, Rumba and Afro-Cuban. As well as an experienced dancer and teacher, Paola is also responsible for the organisation and running of the weekly salsa classes, workshops and events.
