Known as a master of “soneo,” an improvisational vocal technique, Santa Rosa has recorded such Salsa hits as “Muneca” and “Cantante De Cartel.” His song, “Perdoname,” has become a popular Salsa anthem. Santa Rosa has increasingly reached out to audiences outside of Latin America.
THE VENUE
TROXY
The Troxy is a 1930’s art deco Grade II listed building with the capacity of over 2,600 and prides itself as one of the capitals premier corporate, conferencing, exhibition, banqueting and live concert venues.
Designed by George Coles for Hyams & Gale as a cinema in 1933, it was renowned for its large revolving stage, Wurlitzer Organ and opulent decor which included chandeliers and large sweeping staircases.
The Troxy was also used for live stage shows boasting performers such as Vera Lynn, Clark gable and the Andrew Sisters.
As a result of the wartime damage to the building, the Troxy closed its doors in1960 showing its last film The Siege of Sidney Street and re opened in 1963 as the London Opera Centre run by The Royal Opera House.
The venue gained its Grade II listing in 1990 and was converted into a Bingo Hall run by Mecca Bingo until 2006.
After so many changes and alterations over the years this truly magical venue has been lovingly and extensively refurbished by its current owners and returned to its former glory adding just a hint of modern fusion.
Located on the borders of the financial district, Troxy is 10 minutes away from Bank and Tower Hill and 20 minutes away from Docklands.

GILBERTO SANTA ROSA & HIS ORCHESTRA
BIOGRAPHY
Gilberto Santa Rosa was born on 21 August 1962, in Puerto Rico and today is known as “El Caballero de la Salsa” (the gentleman of salsa).
Studying music from the age of 12, Santa Rosa performed his first professional concert, with the help of his teacher, Mario Ortiz, two years later. Following a two-year stint as lead vocalist of an orchestra, La Grande, during which time he was taken under the wing of trumpet player Elias Lopes, he joined the Puerto Rico All Stars to record a tribute to the music of Eddie Palmieri, Homanje De Eddie Palmieri, in 1979. The same year, he spent several months with Tommy Olivencia His Orchestra.
A turning point in Santa Rosa’s career came in 1980, when he accepted an invitation to join the band led by timbale player Willie Rosario. During the six years that he remained with the group, he was featured on such albums as Portrait of a Salsa Man, The Salsa Machine, and Nueva Cosecha.
Santa Rosa then signed with Ralph Cartagena’s Combo Records. In 1986, he debuted on Good Vibrations fronting his own salsa orquesta. After releasing three more albums on Combo, including “De Amor y Salsa”, he switched to CBS Records and issued the chart-topping salsa romantica set Punto De Vista in 1990, which went platinum and spawned the smash hits “Vivir Sin Ella” and “Perdoname”. Santa Rosa’s 1991 CBS/Sony follow-up, Perspectiva, was another monster hit.
Since the mid-80s, the mainstream salsa recording industry in Puerto Rico and the USA has been largely preoccupied with developing and marketing the images of “good looking” young male vocalists, rather than producing solid, stimulating music performed by swinging soneros (improvising salsa singers).
A True "Sonero":
A sonero is an improvising salsa singer, and Santa Rosa is considered one of the true ‘soneros” of his generation. He is known for his exceptional interpretation of ‘salsa romantica’ as well as a great singer of the “tropical” style of music.
