Tuesday 11th November 2008
Live rhythms of Cuba @ Third Space Every 2nd Tuesday in the month! Music for Dancing – Tradition mix of Cuban Music and Timba from the superb Leo Duany y su Tumbao Tivoli!
THE BAND
A sensational Cuban sextet with a big sound gets it’s name from the unique "tumbao (beat)" from their "barrio (neighbourhood)" El Tivoli in Santiago de Cuba. Four of the six musicans come from this "barrio" and these four all started their musical lives as self-taught percussionists and this is the underlying sound of the band. Leo Duany who since has become a multi-instrumentalist/singer puts his tumbao into the "tres" (sometimes known as a Cuban guitar) and is lead singer. "Poli" aka "biscuit" puts his tumbao into the baby bass, Temo is on bongos & clave and Randy on congas. The sound complimented by Adriana’s beautiful flute playing and backing vocals.
SUR CARIBE exploded onto the Salsa scene in UK when they came to perform at the Cuban Carnaval 2 years ago! Now resident in the UK, many of the talented musicians have joined Leo Duany’s exciting ensemble of TUMBO TIVOLI to create a brand new rich sound capitalising on the vast experience and flair of their Cuban artistry!
Tumbao Tivoli, is a natural progression of Leo Duany's Cuban quartet with the addition of Congas. On becoming a quintet (and now sextet) the band became Tumbao Tivoli – the tightest and most danceable Cuban music band in the country. As leader of Sonora La Calle and Leo Duany’s Mambochambo, Leo has performed at some of the world’s top venues like the Barbican and Royal Festival Hall in London and The New Morning in Paris, Melkweg in Amsterdam and at major festivals like Glasgow International Jazz Festival, Bath International Music Festival, Edinburgh Festival, WOMAD, Sligo, Cuba Presente, Stockton International Festival, Toros y Salsa, Highland Festival, Aberdeen Alternative Festival, Orkney Folk Festival, and has toured extensively in the UK, France, Ireland, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Angola and Dominican Republic. Leo started his national and international artistic career at the age of 6 playing with Afro-Cuban folkloric groups dancing, singing and playing percussion. He went onto play with a number of major Cuban bands from Santiago. In 1993 he formed Sonora La Calle, for which he was lead singer and band leader. In 1995 he moved to London, and started touring in Europe with Sonora La Calle in 1996, one of the first Cuban bands to extensively tour the UK. In November 2000, he formed a big band, Leo Duany y su MamboChambo (also known as Sonora Huracan in Santiago), which is now considered one of Santiago de Cuba’s best big bands.
